Snack Mix Recipe
Snack Mix Recipe with a Southwestern Flare
Popcorn is high in fiber, low in fat and calories. It has no sodium and is sugar free. It’s the perfect snack unless you’re trying not to consume too much carbohydrates. Take note, too, that popcorn’s sugar, fat and sodium content depends on how the popcorn is prepared.
| Ingredients: |
* 2 bags Fat Free microwave popcorn (any flavor), popped (24 cups)
* 6 cups baked cheddar flavor corn snacks
* 2 cups fat-free pretzel sticks
* 2 tbsp reduced-fat margarine, melted
* 1 tsp chili powder
* 1/2 tsp ground cumin
* 1/2 tsp garlic powder
* 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
| Directions: |
Preheat oven to 300°F. Follow package directors for popping popcorn. In a large bowl with a lid, place popcorn, corn snacks and pretzels. In a separate bowl, combine melted margarine, cumin, chili powder and garlic powder. Mix well and pour over popcorn, corn snacks and pretzels. Secure lid over bowl and toss/shake bowl. Take off lid. Spread popcorn mixture on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 12 minutes. Let cool before putting in an airtight bowl.
Popcorn Trivia:
- There are shipping companies that have tried to use popcorn as an environment-friendly packing material (instead of the other “popcorn” — the expanded polystyrene). However, real popcorn is flammable, expensive, heavier and attracts pests.
- The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of 4 not be served popcorn to avoid choking. Popcorn is actually one of the leading causes of death by choking among children.
- In Illinois in October 2006, the world’s biggest popcorn ball was displayed in public. The giant popcorn weight 3,415lbs (1,550kg), had a diameter of 8 feet (2.4 meters) and a circumference of 24.6 feet (8 meters).
