Apple Nachos Drizzled with Peanut Butter Sauce

This is a sure-fire recipe that your kids will love. Serve on a big, colorful plate as a fun lunch or after-school snack.

Ingredients:

For the nachos:

2 whole pita breads
1 apple, diced
1 banana, halved and sliced
1/4 cup butter, melted
3 tbsp sugar
1 tsp cinnamon

For the sauce:

1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
1/4 cup whole milk
1 tbsp of honey

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Cut pita breads in half then cut the halves in half. You will have 8 pita triangles (4 per bread). Separate and pull pita bread apart at the edge. Don’t pull all the way; make sure the edge is still attached. Brush melted butter on the pita chips. Sprinkle some cinnamon and sugar. Place the pita chips on a baking tray and bake for 7 minutes. While the pita chips are baking, mix peanut butter, milk and honey in a small sauce pan. Stir until peanut butter and honey melts and the milk thickens slightly. Arrange pita chips on a big plate. Add sliced apples and bananas. Drizzle peanut butter sauce over pita chips.

Apple Factoids:

  • Studies suggest that apples may lower the risk of cancer, including prostate cancer, colon cancer and lung cancer, and help with weight loss, heart disease and cholesterol control.
  • The seed of an apple is slightly poisonous. It contains amygdalin, which is a cyanogenic glycoside. The amount of amygdalin in apple seeds is not enough to be fatal to humans. However, apple seeds can be used to deter birds.
  • The apple tree is believed to be the earliest tree to be cultivated. It was recorded that dwarfed apples were discovered by Alexander the Great in Asia Minor in 300BC. He brought the apples to Macedonia, where they were cultivated.
  • Apples didn’t appear in North American until the 1600s, when the colonists brought this fruit to the New World. It is believed that the first apple orchard in North America was established in 1625 in an area near Boston.
